Ya know I was thinking about that yesterday when I was watching Labyrinth. Jareth does seem to be a little jealous, especialy when he says how could Sara "like a repuslive little scab like you?". Although part of it was to scare Hoggle and knock down his self esteem, I think.

Tamar recently considered the line: "Bosom companions...friends?"

Oh, yes, I think he was livid that Hoggle was getting more attention from Sarah than he was. I mean, it was Jareth who went through all the trouble of stealing Toby and setting up challenges for Sarah to overcome, and she didn't even appreciate it. Even after Hoggle runs away just before Sarah meets Ludo, who does she call out for when Ludo disappears in the forest? She calls for Hoggle, even though he has betrayed her, albeit not as severely as he later will in that infamous and well-loved peach scene.

Yes, I think Jareth was furious and extremely jealous that she turned to Hoggle for help instead of admitting to Jareth that he had overpowered her. Here he is, a suave, dashing king who's losing the girl to a "replusive little scab". He was so envious, he forced Hoggle (in the "bosom companions" scene) into another position where he must betray Sarah again, probably with the intent that she will come to hate Hoggle. Jareth could have easily chosen another one of his minions to give the peach to Sarah. After already being betrayed once and lied to previously, Sarah had no hint that Hoggle could ever be trusted again. If I were in her position (with her unromantic attitudes towards our misunderstood hero Jareth), I think I would rather have taken a peach from a total stranger, than from Hoggle. I suppose Jareth was so jealous of Hoggle that he wanted to make Sarah hate Hoggle as much as she apparently hated Jareth.

Tamar asked about Jareth's Jealousy in the scene where he gives Hoggle the peach for Sarah. I agree with Luna's wonderful response whole-heartedly! He was totally jealous that Sarah liked Hoggle, a lieing, caniving, betraying, coward, better than he, a dashing, rogueish, powerful, king. I also think the first time you see his emotions for Sarah is in the scene after they had just escaped the oubliette. Where he says "So how are you enjoying my Labyrinth?" Now tell me if I'm wrong, but wasn't his attitude and voice a bit breathless? I'm obssessed, I know, and that's why I'm on this list!

Love you all!

Yes I think it was, I mean aside from the fact he knew Hoggle was betraying him he was hoping she was giving up by then and not making friends with "a repulsive little scab" like Hogwart.. Hoggle. Nothing Tra la la? Although, is it me, it did seem a little easy for her to get through the whole thing I mean. I think it was because Jareth wanted her to love him obviously but the bog of stench and the cleaners were the most he could offer? Well, there was the peach, and I love the ballroom scene even if the inside wall looks a little funny. He said he was exhausted from living up to her expectations in the end. Hmm I will have to think about it though I have noticed it.

Obsessed? We're all obsessed! I'm mad you're mad, we're ALL mad!... and obsessed.

I wonder if any-one noticed that there's always a way for Sarah to solve the problem. I've noticed that the wall falls down when the cleaners are practically touching Sarah, and though she was scared she saved herself. But wait a minute, if Jareth was so powerful he could just not let it be with his magic if he wanted to destroy her. He wanted to act fair, well as fair as he possibly could. And I agree with Kethryn that his eyes and his breathless voice keeps much more sense, than just a simple interest. He was obsessed with Sarah!

I always felt there were, well, rules to how he had to do things. She always had to have a way out, and a way to save herself. He could scare her into giving up, but not hurt her. I know some of you folks look at Labyrinth as a analogy to growing up, but it's also just simply a quest in the fictional sense. Hmm, I don't know if this is making sense, but I think I've given the gist of it.

I have to agree, Jareth is an obsessive being.

I see him as Dark Unseelie Fae as well. They have their own kind of morality and ethic.

I also think it's not just Sarah, any strong willed personality is going to be a lure. If he can twist, reshape or fit things into his own design it's part of the game. I think even when he loses he wins. The owl flies from Sarah's window. He hasn't won, but he's still there. (Unless something otherwise is mentioned in the book I have not read yet.)

Jareth makes it clear he has motivations for everything... it's why I'm reworking my story }:>
